Tiny Tropical Treasures: Introducing Liberty™ Toy™ Cannas
GRAIN VALLEY, July 2003. New for 2004 is the first of a line of ultra-dwarf cannas, Liberty™ Toy™ Red. Introduced by Dr. R. J. (Jack) Roberson, the award-winning breeder of the Patriot™ Lantanas, Liberty™ Toy™ Red blooms in early summer at only 12" in height and matures to a diminutive 24". This dynamite little beauty gives the bold splash of color characteristic of cannas, but in a "pint-size" plant appropriate for smaller spaces, borders, and patio container gardens. The brilliant red bloom contrasts the medium-green foliage. Like its taller (3-4') cousins the Liberty™ Dwarf Cannas, Liberty™ Toy™ is sturdy, increases rapidly, sheds spent blooms quickly and cleanly, and is resistant to heat, rot and leaf rollers.
Liberty™ Dwarf™ and Liberty™ Toy™ Cannas are the result of many years of developing, producing and marketing an improved line of dwarf cannas. Cannas have come a long way since the days when they towered in formal Victorian gardens and American town squares. Garden varieties have been grown for nearly 400 years and belong to a complex group of hybrids that come in various sizes, forms and colors. Unforgettable color is one hallmark of the Liberty™ lines. Liberty™ Bugle Boy (PP#9154) issues a wake-up call with vibrant red blooms splashed with shocking yellow, framed by shiny apple-green foliage. Liberty™ Scarlet (PP#9896) features 7" bright lipstick-red flowers, set against unusual burgundy foliage. The Liberty™ Dwarf series also includes 'Watermelon,' 'Pink,' and 'Sun.' Dwarf™ or Toy™, Liberty™ Cannas make a dramatic statement in the landscape with color from early in the season until frost.
To grow cannas, first soak the bare-root rhizomes in tepid water for 24 hours, then plant when all danger of frost is past. Full sun and plenty of water are keys to good growth and constant bloom. Set the rhizomes 1- to 1½-inches deep for best results. Allow cannas two to three weeks to become established, then feed monthly with a 1-2-1 ratio fertilizer or once with a slow-release fertilizer of similar formulation.
Liberty™ Toy™ Cannas make their garden center debut in Spring of 2004 and join Liberty™ Dwarf Cannas in the family of outstanding Gardens of Glory™ products.
